In the current scenario of the third sector, managers face complex challenges such as the scarcity of resources, the need to respond to growing needs and the pressure for tangible results. The course “The Art of Solving Challenges: Design Thinking for Third Sector Leaders” was specially created to enable leaders and managers (Directors, Technical Directors, Social Response Coordinators) to face these challenges with creativity and strategy.

With a practical and interactive approach, the course will present Design Thinking as a powerful tool for identifying problems, developing partnerships and creating innovative solutions that generate a positive impact on the target audience. For four hours, trainees will be led through a structured process that combines empathy, collaboration and experimentation, adapted to the reality of third sector organizations.

Get ready to turn challenges into opportunities, learn to think outside the box and implement significant changes in your organization.

Module 1: Introduction to Design Thinking in the Third Sector

  • Definition and principles of Design Thinking.
  • The relevance of Design Thinking for third sector organizations.
  • Practical examples of successful use of Design Thinking in the third sector.

Module 2: The Design Thinking Process

  • The five stages of Design Thinking: Empathy, Definition, Ideation, Prototyping and Testing.
  • Adaptations of the process to contexts of limited resources and social impact.

Practical activity 1: Schematizing Challenges

Trainees will have the opportunity to brainstorm individually about the challenges they face in their organizations and will have to identify which one or ones they wish to address in the course.


Module 3: Empathy and Definition Stage

  • Qualitative data collection techniques (interviews, observation, immersion).
  • How to define problems in a clear and human-centered way.

Practical activity 2: Building Personas and Empathy Maps

Trainees will have the opportunity to create a persona representing the users of their services and will have to develop an empathy map.


Module 4: Ideation, Prototyping and Testing

  • Brainstorming tools to create innovative solutions.
  • How to develop low-cost rapid prototypes.
  • Methods for testing and validating solutions with Partners or Interest Groups.

Practical activity 3: Creating Rapid Prototypes

The trainees will develop an initial prototype solution to the chosen challenge.


Module 5: Implementation and Evaluation

  • Strategies for implementing the solutions developed.
  • How to measure the impact and adjust solutions.
  • Final reflection and next steps.

Ana Abreu

Graduated in Social Work from the Instituto Superior de Serviço Social do Porto, Member of the Order of Social Workers No. 02407. Works at the São João Local Health Unit (Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de São João, E.P.E.). She has a postgraduate degree in Social Enterprise Management and a postgraduate degree in Quality Management for Social Solidarity Organizations. Member of the Social Work Research and Training Center at ULS São João. She has extensive experience in the technical management of IPSS and for-profit organizations. She worked in England as a Social Worker in a Caring Hospital Homes (Award Winning Caring Hospital Homes). Certified trainer with E-Trainer Specialization.
